Project overview

This Annabelle Ave home in Roseville sits on a large lot that backs directly onto a golf course. On one side, the grade rises away from the house. The single-story house has multiple wings, with doors opening onto the yard from several points. Past the rear fence, the fairway and mature trees carry the outlook well beyond the property line.

The lot had space and a view but no plan. There was room for several distinct areas, with nothing connecting them and a slope that was doing nothing.

What the project needed to do:

  • Give the pool a defined space rather than a spot in a large open yard
  • Put something worth looking at on the far side of the water
  • Keep the golf course outlook open rather than building against it
  • Use the slope instead of leaving it as unusable bank
  • Connect several separate areas into one route through the yard

How the design answered it

Pool between two buildings

A long rectangular pool runs between the house and a covered pool house, which face each other across the water.

A pool house to look at

A gabled pool house with open sides, seating and a mounted screen closes the view down the pool.

Water down the slope

A rock waterfall and stream are built into the slope, with planting stepped up the bank.

A green on the upper level

A synthetic putting green sits on the upper level, toward the course, linked to the deck by flagstone paths.

Details across a full backyard

Six pieces that turn a sloping lot beside a fairway into one connected yard.

Long rectangular pool leading straight to the gabled pool house, with blue planters at the near corners

Shape

A long rectangular pool set square between the house and the pool house. Both ends are squared, so the two structures line up across the water.

Blue tile band on a step edge inside the pool, below the waterline tile and stone coping

Tile detail

Glass tile bands run along the steps and the entry ledge. Each band marks a change in level against the aggregate interior.

Blue mosaic compass rose on the pool floor, seen through the water

Mosaic inlays

Small mosaic figures sit in the pool floor and walls, including a compass rose and a turtle. They add detail beyond the finish.

Open gabled pool house with a wall-mounted TV and lounge seating, reflected in the pool

Pool house

A gabled structure, open on three sides, stands across the water from the house. Its seating, lighting and mounted screen face back across the water.

Boulder waterfall dropping through several tiers on the planted slope, below the wood fence

Rock waterfall

Boulders set into the slope carry water down through several drops into a shallow stream. Lights sit among the rocks.

Aerial view of the putting green with flags, stepping stones and a flagstone path, the golf course beyond the fence

Putting green

A contoured synthetic green on the upper level, edged in stone, on the course side of the yard. Flagstone paths reach it from the pool deck.

Questions about this build

Can a pool house be built at the far end of a pool?

Yes. On this Roseville build, Wells Pools set a gabled pool house at the far end of the water. It is open on three sides, with seating and a mounted screen facing the house.

How do you use a sloped backyard around a pool?

Turn the slope into a feature rather than a bank. Here, boulders carry a waterfall and stream down the grade. Planting steps up beside them, and stone walls hold each level.

Can you add a putting green to a pool project?

Yes. This yard has a contoured synthetic green on its upper level, edged in stone. Flagstone paths and stepping stones link it to the pool deck. See turf and putting greens.

What are mosaic inlays in a pool?

Mosaic inlays are small tile pictures set into the pool floor or walls. This pool has a blue compass rose on its floor, plus a turtle. They give the aggregate finish a personal touch.

Why put tile bands on pool steps?

A band of tile marks the edge of each step and ledge. On this pool the bands run along the steps and the entry ledge. They show every change in level against the darker interior.

How do you keep a golf course view open around a pool?

Keep tall structures off the course side. Here the pool house sits at the end of the pool, and the low green faces the fairway. Nothing tall blocks the view past the rear fence.

Can I see the whole yard planned before work starts?

Yes. First, one of our design professionals walks your yard with you. Your custom 3D design arrives inside two weeks, showing the pool, structures and paths before any digging.
