A Woodland farmhouse where a long, dark pool runs beside the covered patio, with an infinity edge facing the fields.
Project overview
This Myrtle Ln home is a white board-and-batten farmhouse on open land in Woodland, with large oaks around the house and orchard rows beyond. A deep covered patio with a wood ceiling runs along the back and opens to the main living space through wide glass doors.
The patio already looked straight out to the fields. The pool had to sit between the house and that view, running alongside the patio without interrupting it.
What the pool needed to do:
- Run the length of the covered patio, a step from the deck
- Keep the view to the oaks and fields open from inside the house
- Carry an infinity edge on the side facing the lawn
- Look as finished from the lawn as it does from the patio
- Leave room at the far end for loungers in the sun
How the design answered it
A pool beside the patio
The pool runs the full length of the covered patio, separated by a strip of concrete deck, so the water sits a step from the doors.
An infinity edge
On the field side the pool has an infinity edge, so from the patio the surface meets the lawn and trees with no visible rim.
A dark interior
A dark finish turns the water into a mirror, picking up the oaks, the orchard and the evening sky.
Sun at the far end
A paved area at the far end of the pool holds a row of loungers, out from under the cover and in full sun.
Details built toward the open fields
Everything on the field side of the pool was placed so the view from the patio stays clear.

Infinity edge
On the lawn side the water spills over an infinity edge, leaving no raised rim between the patio and the fields.

Dark side wall
Below the edge, the pool's lawn-side face is finished in dark tile above a narrow basin that collects the overflow.

Patio-side deck
A strip of gray concrete runs between the covered patio and the water, wide enough to walk without blocking the view.

Still surface
The dark interior holds a calm, mirror-like surface that reflects the oaks and the sky at dusk.

Lounge end
A paved area at the far end of the pool sits in full sun, set back from the covered patio and the living space.

Saw-cut panels
The deck is laid in large gray concrete panels with straight cut joints that follow the clean lines of the house.

Questions about this build
What should you plan for when building a pool on a rural lot?
Access for equipment and the distance to power and gas lines both shape the plan. Open land usually gives more freedom in where the pool can sit.
Why run a pool parallel to the house?
It keeps the water close to the doors and the shade of the patio. On this Woodland build the pool runs alongside the covered patio for its full length.
Will a pool block the view from inside the house?
Not when the edges sit low. With the water held level with the far edge, the view from the patio runs straight across the pool to the fields.
Where should loungers go around a pool?
Somewhere in the sun but within a few steps of the water. Placing them at one end keeps the main deck clear for walking and seating.
Does a modern pool suit a farmhouse-style home?
Yes. Simple straight lines and a dark interior sit comfortably beside board-and-batten siding, and keep the attention on the house and the land around it.
How does an infinity edge work on flat ground?
Water spills over one lowered edge into a basin set below it. On flat land the pool sits slightly above the lawn, so that edge reads against the grass and trees.
Can a pool be finished differently on each side?
Yes. Each side can be finished for what faces it. Here the patio side meets a flat concrete deck while the lawn side shows a dark tiled face.
Can a long pool double as a lap pool?
A long, straight rectangle works well for laps as long as there is open water from end to end. Steps and ledges kept to one end help.
