A long lap pool and corner spa fill this narrow yard. Wells Pools built it as a pool builder in Davis, CA, with stone paving on every side.
Project overview
This Everglades Pl home in Davis sits on a deep, narrow lot. The two-story house is set close to one side. A full-height fence runs the length of the other. Mature trees line the perimeter, and the covered rear porch looks directly down the yard. The usable space was long and tight, not wide.
A conventional pool shape would have consumed the entire width and left nothing to walk around.
What the pool needed to do:
- Fit the long, narrow footprint without crowding the house
- Leave enough deck to move around the full perimeter
- Work as a lap pool while still functioning as a family pool
- Sit low so the two-story elevation stayed the dominant vertical element
How the design answered it
Down the length of the yard
A rectangular lap pool runs the length of the yard, set parallel to the fence line.
Spa in the seating area
The spa sits at the far end, raised and finished in wood decking to join the seating area.
Stone on every side
Large-format stone paving runs on all sides, giving continuous deck without narrowing the water.
Details built for a narrow lot
Each detail keeps a long, slim yard open enough to swim, walk and sit in.

Shape
A long rectangular pool fills the yard from end to end, parallel to the house. The narrow lot reads as usable rather than tight.

Spa
Squared into one corner at the far end. A wood cap frames its rim and ties it to the wall and seating beside it.

Raised wood wall
Horizontal wood forms a raised wall along one edge of the pool. It gives the flat yard a back edge and doubles as a seating line.

Interior finish
A dark interior turns the water reflective, picking up the trees, the fence and the house across the surface.

Decking
Large-format stone paving in irregular sizes surrounds the pool. The joints run lengthwise down the yard.

Raised planter
A low planted bed runs along the far edge above the pool wall. It keeps green at eye level without taking deck space.

Questions about this build
Can a lap pool fit in a narrow side yard?
Yes. This Davis pool stretches down a deep, narrow lot, parallel to the fence. Keeping it slim left stone deck on every side to walk around.
Can a lap pool also work as a family pool?
It can. Wells Pools gave this one a corner spa and room for loungers along the house side. Swimmers get a long, straight run, and everyone else gets a place to sit.
Why build a raised wall along the pool?
A raised wall gives a flat yard a back edge. On this build it is clad in horizontal wood and doubles as a seating line. A planted bed runs along the top.
What does a dark pool interior do?
A dark interior makes the water act like a mirror. Here it reflects the trees, the fence and the two-story house. After dark, the colored LED lights glow against it.
What kind of decking surrounds this pool?
Stone paving in mixed large sizes runs around the whole pool. The joints run lengthwise, which keeps the lot reading long and orderly.
How is the spa tied into the rest of the yard?
The spa is squared into the far corner of the pool. A wood cap frames its rim and links it to the wood wall. A seating area with a fire table sits just beyond.
How long does a build like this take?
Construction on a Wells Pools build usually runs six to eight weeks. Permits and the weather can push that out.
